How Often Should You Service Your AC in Fresno?

June 15, 2026 · 4 min read

Fresno summers regularly climb past 100°F, and from June through September your air conditioner may run for hours at a stretch, day after day. That workload is far heavier than what systems face in milder climates, which means maintenance schedules written for the average American home don't quite apply here.

The short answer: once a year, before summer

For most Central Valley homes, a professional tune-up once a year, ideally in spring before the first heat wave, is the right rhythm. A spring visit catches winter's wear before the system is under load, and it means you're not competing for appointments in July when every AC company in town is booked solid.

If your system also handles heating, such as a heat pump or a furnace sharing the same blower, a second check in fall is worth it. Cooling and heating stress different components, and a fall visit makes sure the heating side is safe and ready.

What a real tune-up includes

A proper maintenance visit is more than a filter change. Your technician should inspect and clean the condenser and evaporator coils, check refrigerant charge, test electrical connections and capacitors, verify airflow, and confirm the thermostat is reading accurately. Dirty coils alone can quietly add 20 to 30 percent to your cooling costs.

Between professional visits, the one job that's yours is changing the filter. During heavy summer use in our dusty Valley air, check it monthly.

What skipping it costs

Most of the mid-July breakdowns we see started as small, cheap problems: a weak capacitor, a clogged drain line, low refrigerant from a slow leak. Left alone, they become compressor failures and emergency calls during the hottest week of the year, when parts and patience are both in short supply.

An annual tune-up typically pays for itself in energy savings alone, before you count the repairs it prevents. If your AC hasn't been looked at since last summer, spring is the time. Give us a call and we'll get you on the schedule.
