Every June, the first real heat wave hits Fresno and the phones light up with the same story: 'It worked fine last year, and now it won't cool.' Most of those calls were preventable. Here's a simple checklist to run through each spring. Most of it is free, and all of it is easier than a breakdown in July.
1. Change the filter
The cheapest, most effective thing you can do. A clogged filter chokes airflow, makes the system work harder, and can even freeze the evaporator coil. Check it monthly during heavy use, since Valley dust is hard on filters.
2. Clear around the outdoor unit
Your condenser needs to breathe. Clear leaves, grass clippings, and debris, and trim plants back at least two feet. If the fins are caked with dust, rinse them gently with a garden hose, with the power off and working from the inside out if you can.
3. Test it before you need it
On the first warm day, run the system for 15 to 20 minutes. Listen for grinding or clicking, make sure the air is actually cold, and check that the outdoor fan spins up. Finding a problem in April means a convenient repair. Finding it in July means a sweaty wait.
4. Check your thermostat
Replace batteries and make sure readings match reality. If you're still on a manual thermostat, a programmable one pays for itself. Set it warmer while you're at work and cooler for the evening, and you save all summer without thinking about it.
5. Schedule a professional tune-up
The steps above handle the basics, but refrigerant charge, electrical components, and coil condition need a professional eye. A spring tune-up catches the problems that cause mid-summer breakdowns, and spring appointments are far easier to get than July ones.
